Barbara Czarniawska, MA in Social and Industrial Psychology, Warsaw
University, 1970; Ph.D.in Economic Sciences, Warsaw School of
Economics, 1976. Doctor honoris causa at Stockholm School of Economics,
2005; Copenhagen Business School and Helsinki School of Economics 2006.
She holds a Chair in Management Studies at Gothenburg Research
Institute, School of Business, Economics and Law at University of
Gothenburg, Sweden. Her research takes a constructionist perspective on
organizing, most recently exploring the connections between popular
culture and practice of management. She is interested in methodology,
especially in field studies and in the application of narratology to
social studies. Her latest books in English are Writing Management
(1999) A Tale of Three Cities (2002), Narratives in Social Science
Research, (2004), Shadowing and Other Techniques of Doing Fieldwork in
Modern Societies, (2007) and A Theory of Organizing (2008). She has
recently edited Actor-Network Theory and Organizing (with Tor Hernes,
2005), Global Ideas (with Guje Sevón, 2005), Management Education &
Humanities (with Pasquale Gagliardi, 2006), Organization Theory (2
volumes, 2006), and Organizing in the Face of Risk and Threat (2009).
Czarniawska is a member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences,
the Swedish Royal Engineering Academy, the Royal Society of Art and
Sciences in Gothenburg and Societas Scientiarum Finnica. She received
Lily and Sven Thuréus Technical-Economic Award for internationally
renowned research in organization theory in 2000 and Wihuri
International Prize in recognition of creative work that has specially
furthered and developed the cultural and economic progress of mankind”,
2003.
