With his partner Jill Freedman, Gene has practiced, studied, taught, and written about narrative therapy for over two decades. Gene and Jill’s writings include the books Narrative Therapy: The social construction of preferred realities and Narrative Therapy With Couples. . . and a Whole Lot More! Gene is Associate Professor and Director of Behavioral Science Education in the Family Medicine Residency Program at NorthShore University HealthSystem, a teaching affiliate of the University of Chicago. He is also volunteer faculty at Evanston Family Therapy Center and associate faculty at the Chicago Center for Family Health. He has served on the Committee on Accreditation in Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) and on the board of the American Family Therapy Academy (AFTA). He was awarded for outstanding contributions and leadership to the association by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. With Jill Freedman, he received the Award for Innovative Contribution to Family Therapy from AFTA in 2009. In his work with young physicians, Gene strives to help them preserve a human, interpersonal, and reflective focus in the face of corporate pressures toward pills, procedures, and, “productivity.” His current interests, reflected in his international teaching of narrative therapy, include working with survivors of trauma and consulting to organizations and communities.
