Liesbeth Gerritsen currently works for the Portland Police Bureau in Portland, Oregon . She coordinates their Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program and helps provide a 40-hour training for patrol officers and sergeants. This training focuses on police interaction with people in crisis, with a special emphasis on people who suffer from mental health disorders. Liesbeth is a member of the police bureau’s Hostage Negotiation Team and provides mental health consultation on incidents. She also works for a mobile mental health crisis team that responds on-site to mental health emergencies. Liesbeth is interested in the dynamics of conflict in all settings, but especially those that involve people who do not respond to traditional methods of communication. She also consults with private businesses and provides trainings in de-escalation and crisis communication.
