Ottar works as a Professor in Mental Health Care at University College of Southeast Norway, and Professor 2 at Nord University. He is also affiliated with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). South-Trondelag Family Therapy Centre. He is in the Board of Taos Institute Europe and a Taos Associate. He did his PhD-research in Norway on a collaborative learning project on how therapists learn new ideas and practices together. His research and practice is mostly focused on recovery, collaborative action research, social constructionist theory and practice, supervision, collaborative and dialogical practices in family therapy and mental health care, user involvement in research. He is also very interested in the philosophy of mental health and recovery processes.
