Recovered without Treatment: The Process of Abandoning Crystal Meth Use without Professional Help
by Pavel Nepustil

The focus of this book is the process of natural recovery from long-term methamphetamine use. Apart from the evidence and theoretical background, it describes the real stories of people who have managed to quit long-term use of this illicit drug – widely used in the Czech Republic – without professional help.

The relational viewpoint based on social constructionist traditions, specifically Ken Gergen´s concepts of multi-being and relational flow was used for interpreting the narrative interviews that were conducted. The basic research question was: How can we use the relational theory for interpreting the change process after quitting long-term methamphetamine use without formal treatment? Nineteen narrative interviews with people who quit methamphetamines more than five years ago were gathered followed by an in-depth analysis of seven of them.

The study shows that the transformation after quitting long-term methamphetamine use is a very natural process, aptly described by the term “natural recovery“. In the stories of the interviewed people, we can broadly distinguish three interconnected processes: 1) Disruption of the relational flow in the period of methamphetamine use; 2) Co-creation of transitional trajectories; 3) Development of a new sense of belonging.

Recovery from long-term drug use in the sense of this book is a relational trajectory towards feeling “at home“ in the relational flow that is no longer connected with regular drug use.
