February 5-10, 2011
The seminar will take place on a cruise ship leaving from Galveston TX and cruising to Mexico. This "Seminar at Sea" is for social change agents and scholars working in community change, organizational change, education, therapy and beyond.
In our daily relations, we improvise and create. Our performances draw upon and shape the worlds in which we live. How might we realize our performative capacity in our organizations, communities, and personal relations?
We invite you to join us for a seminar at sea where performative theories and practices will be explored. Come play and create practices for social transformation in a wide range of contexts including psychotherapy, organizational development, education, healthcare, and community life. We will examine the ways in which play, improvisation, humor, movement, art, storytelling, collaboration, and all performative activities can inspire and transform our organizations, institutions, relations, and personal lives. A conceptual understanding of performance and improvisation, as it relates to constructionist practice, will be explored in both large and small group settings. Additionally, experiential sessions will give participants an opportunity to put performative ideas into practice.
This exciting gathering is co-sponsored by the Houston Galveston Institute and the Taos Institute. There are several unique features of this gathering. The first is the venue. We will be meeting on a Carnival cruise ship, setting sail from Galveston, Texas and making a stop at Progreso and Cozumel, Mexico. The cruise will take place from February 5 – 10, 2011. We are calling this a “seminar at sea.” Seminar at sea sessions will take place on board the ship and in Progreso; the day in Cozumel is a free day.
The venue and theme lend themselves for us to reflexively and recursively explore and perform relational practices in joint action. We believe that all learning experiences are performative and the unique reflexivity that we bring to this seminar will foster an experiential context to the conceptual explorations as outlined in the program.
Join us as we venture the high seas of play, improvisation, performance and humor to expand our personal and professional lives.
