Inés Sametband, Ph.D. is an Argentinean-Canadian provisionally registered psychologist (CAP), and a registered family therapist (AAMFT). She is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Mount Royal University (Canada). Inés graduated as a psychologist from the University of Buenos Aires, where she lived and practiced for many years before moving to Canada. She completed her MSc and her PhD in Counselling Psychology at the University of Calgary, with a focus on social constructionism and discursive research methods. Her research focused on how immigrant families negotiate new cultural identities in family therapy conversations. As part of her training as a family therapist, Inés worked with families at the Calgary Family Therapy Centre (CFTC). At the CFTC, she contributed to several research projects, as well as to Karl Tomm and his colleagues’ recent work (Tomm, St. George, Wulff, & Strong, 2014: Patterns in Interpersonal Interactions). Inés’ work is informed by discursive and collaborative approaches, and she is particularly interested in how people manage transitions to new cultures in ways that their preferred cultural background is relationally recognized. She is also interested in how cultural discourses (beliefs, explanations, values, understandings) feature in therapy conversations. Ines currently lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
