Education, instructor, therapist, rural education in Mexico.

Dr. Jacqueline Walters educational roots are in social work. After obtaining a master’s degree from Wilfred Laurier University in 1980, she relocated to Vancouver from Toronto and became a registered social worker in B.C. She has worked as a clinical social worker, mental health worker, alcohol and drug counselor, and family therapist in a teenage group home. Jacqueline worked in a clinical private practice with individuals, couples and families for ten years. In addition she had been involved working on reserve for First Nations Communities throughout British Columbia, and offering counseling to urban First Nations people.

For some time Jacqueline worked in a non-profit counseling agency and began to become interested more in community work and subsequently volunteered abroad.

Throughout the last 30 years she also took time to travel in various parts of the world gaining more life experience through exposure to other cultures.

She began to offer workshops and training in family therapy and counseling approaches throughout B.C. Over the past 12 years Jacqueline has been teaching a wide variety of courses at City University both in the masters of counseling program and more recently in the education program.

In the past year she embarked on a doctoral program at Taos Institute. Her inquiry pertained to rural educational challenges. She focused in particular on how to foster a love of learning in a small coastal community in Mexico informed by a social/relational constructionist stance.

Teaching Experience:
Initially Jacqueline offered workshops on family therapy and clinical approaches to those working in mental health and drug and alcohol clinics in B.C.

She collaborated with some colleagues to create a family therapy program to clinicians in the field in 1990’s which operated for several years.

Roughly 12 years ago she began to teach at city university in the counseling program and a few years ago in the education program.

Conferences Attended:
In the 1980’s Jacqueline attended many local workshops concerning family therapy. She spent time in Italy studying with the Milan group and later in Palo Alto at the mental research institute. She attended workshops given by Carl Whittaker, Karl Tomm, Lorraine Wright, George Enns, Virginia Satir, Jay Haley, Michael White, David Epston, Amanda Kamsler, Just Therapy, Allan Jenkins, Therapeutic Conversations, 1, 3, 6., Jonella Bird, Dan Siegel, Andrew Turnoff, and EMDR training. Other conferences included Orcas workshops on Vancouver Island with Jan Bavelas and Lynn Hoffman. More recently Jacqueline has been attending the Taos Institute workshops in Mexico and the United States.

Courses taught at City University:
Jacqueline has taught, both online and in class, many of the courses in the masters of counseling program throughout the years. The introductory course, the brief therapy course, the group counseling course, the family therapy course, the couples counseling course, the law and ethics course, the substance misuse course, and the practicum course are some of them. She has attended the comprehensive exams and read many of the written exams for this program. I am also a second reader for the thesis course.

In the masters of education program Jacqueline has taught the theories course, the developmental course, the mental health course, and the family therapy course. She has also began to work with students on their capstone research projects.

Research, areas of interests:
Jacqueline recently completed her doctorate through Taos Instiute on an inquiry related to encouraging learning among rural Mexican scholarship students. She used action research methodology for this inquiry which was informed by a social/relational philosophical stance. Other areas of interest involve traveling, enjoying the great outdoors in both Vancouver and the gulf islands, gardening and cooking, hiking/walking, kayaking and reading. She manages to continue to find ways to feed her curiosity.
