Matt Mooney serves as part-time faculty for the Boston College School of Social Work and as faculty and board member for the Narrative Therapy Initiative. In addition to these roles, he maintains a full-time independent therapy practice where he meets with young people, adults, and their families. Dr. Mooney received his MSW from Boston College and his Doctorate from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). For nine consecutive years, he trained as a student in the advanced yearlong training program at Jill Freedman and Gene Combs’ Evanston Family Therapy Center. Additionally, he was privileged to receive many years of friendship, mentorship, and supervision from Dr. Stephen Gaddis.
Matt has held positions as a family therapist, high school social worker, clinical supervisor and consultant for community-based, in-home therapy agencies. He is dedicated to teaching and presenting narrative therapy at both the Narrative Therapy Initiative and Boston College.
Dr. Mooney is deeply invested in exploring the power of language and positioning in helping contexts. His research and practice are centered on understanding and addressing the ways in which therapeutic conversations can inadvertently replicate problematic and unjust dominant power relations. Through all of his work, he aims to foster more just and accountable helping practices.
