Frank Thomas, PhD LMFT-S is Professor of Counseling and Counselor Education in the College of Education at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. Frank was a professor and clinical graduate faculty in the Family Therapy Program at Texas Woman’s University in Denton (1989-2001) and an adjunct faculty member and clinical supervisor at Brite Divinity School in the Pastoral Counseling and Theology Program (1995-2007). A former lifeguard, professional musician, and minister, Frank currently teaches doctoral (counseling and counselor education), masters (counseling and family therapy) and undergraduate (education, families) courses. In addition, he maintains a private counseling and consultation practice.
His books include Solution-Focused Supervision: A Resource-Oriented Approach to Developing Clinical Expertise (2013, Springer), Masters of Narrative and Collaborative Therapies: The Voices of Andersen, Anderson, and White (edited with Tapio Malinen and Scot J. Cooper, 2011, Routledge), The Handbook of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy: Clinical Applications (edited with Thorana Nelson, Haworth Press, 2007), Tales from Family Therapy: Life-Changing Clinical Experiences (also edited with Thorana Nelson, Haworth Press, 1998), and Competency Based Counseling: Building on Client Strengths (authored with Jack Cockburn, Augsburg/Fortress, 1998). He has also written over 80 articles and book chapters and is amazed there are enough word combinations to do it.
A licensed marriage and family therapist, Frank was the inaugural Humor Editor for the Journal of Systemic Therapies. He is also on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, the Journal of Family Psychotherapy, the Journal of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (AUS/NZ), Solution-Focused Research Review (UK), The Qualitative Report, and the Journal of the Texas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
His recent publications and presentations, from local to international, are in the areas of self-of-therapist and therapist well-being, solution-focused approaches with children/adolescents and their families, postmodern approaches, ethics, solution-focused supervision, spirituality, humor, couples therapy, historical perspectives in brief and family therapy, and resiliency. Frank has been a therapist for over thirty-seven years, focusing on brief models of therapy in his teaching, supervision, and practice for more than thirty years. He has presented over 210 workshops in 15 different countries, and his work has been translated into Spanish, Mandarin (Chinese), Lithuanian, Swedish, Norwegian, Afrikaans, Japanese, Korean, and Finnish. His best description of his clinical work is “improvisational curiosity.”
People have called Frank “one who seeks clarity, not certainty,” “a teacher who goes about making others’ ideas clearer” for learners (and himself), and “a frustrated stand-up comic.” Lynn Hoffman once wrote of Frank: “You have an amazing talent and experience…I have an enthusiasm about you and the special imagination you add to an event. You are a good, dear friend, a born teacher and story-teller – one of my favorite deep comedians and a great soul.”
Frank has achieved the rank of shodan (black belt) in aikido, the “loving” martial art, and is a sensei (teacher) at Mizu Aikido dojo in Fort Worth. Frank is also an internationally-published amateur photographer and has been married to Lori, an attorney, for over 37 years.
