Professor McCallister's scholarship focuses on the influences of culture on children's academic development. Dr. McCallister is a teacher educator who has also worked extensively as a classroom teacher and educational consultant in numerous elementary, middle, and high schools in New York City and rural Maine. She is the creator of Learning Cultures®, an innovative social-constructivist education model that has been implemented in many K-12 public schools in New York City (see LearningCultures.net). The Learning Cultures methods are designed to improve students’ cooperative interactions so they can develop social-emotional capacities while they are learning traditional academic content. The methods promote self-determination in students by providing them with high levels of independence and responsibility for learning.
