Cynthia McCallister is Associate Professor of Literacy Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at New York University. Professor McCallister’s scholarship focuses on the influences of culture on children’s academic development. Dr. McCallister is a teacher educator who has also worked extensively as a classroom teacher and educational consultant in numerous elementary, middle, and high schools in New York City and rural Maine. She is the creator of Learning Cultures®, an innovative social-constructivist education model that has been implemented in many K-12 public schools in New York City (see LearningCultures.net). The Learning Cultures methods are designed to improve students’ cooperative interactions so they can develop social-emotional capacities while they are learning traditional academic content. The methods promote self-determination in students by providing them with high levels of independence and responsibility for learning.
