Relational methods of learning, relevant not only to service delivery but also to personal development, has been a lifelong focus in Jeff’s clinical and teaching practice. To paraphrase Plutarch: “Education is not about filling buckets: it is about lighting fires”. His professional experience has shown that researchers, clinicians, mangers of services and educators operate within an ecology of socio-economic, cultural, and conceptual environments that are in constant and fluctuating dialogue across these communities of practice. He strives to pay attention to the personal and professional human factors that have the potential to bring to life, in the practical work setting, our evolving knowledge base and clinical skills.

Jeff is a Clinical Psychologist (qualified in 1983) and UK registered Psychotherapist (Family, Couples and Systemic College, UKCP) registered since 1993. He is also an Accredited Supervisor with the Association for Family Therapy (AFT) and has over 39 years of clinical experience and consultation across multiple clinical settings including in-patient and community based psychiatric services, independent psychotherapy services, local authority teams, third sector providers and private practice.

Consulting to course design and teaching delivery, over his professional career he has extensive experience in psychotherapy and counselling curriculum development. He has experience in teaching of clinical psychology, psychotherapy and counselling since 1981 and has contributed to the development, academic validation and professional accreditation of graduate and post-graduate courses during his academic career at The Family Institute (Barnardos 1988 to 2001 and University of South Wales 2001 to 2019). Jeff is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK.

His special interest in applying these ideas to leadership and group processes in learning and teaching has taken him on unexpected journeys. Jeff holds a qualification in Hostile Environment Close Protection and has front line experience as Close Protection Team Leader as well as providing security operational training. Over the past 11 years he has taught survival skills to Humanitarian Aid workers and NGO personnel who operate in hostile environments. He is currently developing Wilderness Therapy programmes with Expedition Leader Dr Raj Joshi.
