Social Construction: Premises and Practices
A Taos Institute Online Course – Fall 2017
Dates: September 5 through October 23, 2017
(A 6-Week Online Course)

This online course features videos and writings of Ken Gergen, Mary Gergen, Sheila McNamee, Harlene Anderson, Barnett Pearce, John Shotter, Saliha Bava and more.
This 6-week online course introduces common premises and orienting ideas central to dialogues on social construction. The ways in which constructionist ideas differ from traditional, realist understandings of the world are explored. The course will consist of six modules with readings, videos and online dialogues via text chat groups. The course is facilitated by Taos Associate, Celiane Camargo Borges, Ph.D. and supported by Dawn Dole, Taos Institute Executive Director.
There will be "live" conference calls for this course held on Mondays from 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM New York time/eastern US time.
There will be an orientation conference call the week of Sept 6th to become familiar with the online learning platform. It is required that all participants attend this orientation. There will be two scheduled orientation available from which to choose.
On the first call participants will meet each other, learn how the course will work and begin to co-create a learning community. This will be followed by five additional conference calls to explore the material from each module. During the week, participants will be required to do the weekly reading, watch the videos, complete writing assignments and connect with their inquiry partner/s for that week. Participants should plan to spend at least 10-12 hours each week on this course between the calls, readings, videos, connecting with a learning partner and writing assignments.

Week 2 – Mon. Sept. 18 - Module 2 – An Introduction to Social Construction
Week 3 – Mon. Sept. 25 – Module 3 – Dialogue and Discourse
Week 4 – Mon. Oct. 2 - Module 4 – Social Construction of the Person
No class – Oct. 9th
Week 5 – Mon. Oct. 16 - Module 5 – Research/Inquiry as Social Construction
Week 6 – Mon. Oct. 23 - Module 6 – Social Construction: Promises and Challenges
Orientation to the platform and course – Everyone is required to attend one of these.
