Dr. Khawla AbuBakerr is the first doctor of family therapy among Palestinians in Israel (in 1997); the first Palestinian licensed family therapist (in 1997) and the first – and still the only – Palestinian licensed supervisor in family therapy (in 1998) in Israel.

She is the first Palestinian woman that was promoted to professorship in the academia in Israel in all fields (in 2008).

She has BA degree in Sociology/Anthropology and Education from Haifa University, Israel and a MA degree in educational counseling (Magna Cum Laud) from Haifa University, Israel. Her MA thesis investigated “The Political Socialization of the Palestinian Child through the Political Children’s Literature” was awarded as the best MA research at the University of Haifa during that academic year (1990). She got her doctorate in family therapy at ‘The School of Social and Systemic Studies, Nova Southeastern University, Florida in 1997. Her dissertation topic was “The Impact of Immigration on Arab Families in South Florida.”

She is invited to lecture in Israel and abroad about her clinical work as well as her field research on various topics such as: Palestinian minority in Israel, the Palestinian family, Palestinian women and Politics, culturally sensitive clinical work in family therapy, the impact of trauma (due to events such as war, sexual abuse, loss) on Palestinian family and individuals, the impact of gender on relations in Arab families.

Professor Abu Baker is Professor of  Behavioral Sciences, Doctor of family therapy.  She is a researcher and lecturer in behavioral sciences, education and family therapy. She is a certified family therapist and has a private practice in Akko, Israel. She was a Board member of the International Association of Family Therapy during two terms, is a Board member of Satir Institute of the Pacific (second term), a member of AFTA (American Family Therapy Academia), and of the Israel Association for Couple and Family Therapy and the Israeli Sociology Association. In addition, she often serves as a referee for several international and local academic journals. 

Professor Abu Baker has published numerous articles in international, Arab and Israeli referee Journals in addition to several books and book chapters. She publishes in English, Hebrew and Arabic – the three languages she is fluent with Family Therapy among Arab families; Sexual Abuse in Arab societies, Trauma therapy among Palestinians, Gender in Arab families.
