Navigating her own life through the socially constructed landscape, being alert and responsive to all the inherent interweaving relationships, (and all the unexpected side roads and scenic routes that can appear)Julia Reid has thus pursued an eclectic career path, mostly in the categories of Teacher, Mentor or Coach, one curious, relational step at a time.
Currently, she works as a teacher educator, lecturing in arts and primary teaching education in the Master of Teaching degree at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education within the University of Melbourne. There she explores evocative and creative ways to embed the arts (and artistry) within the mainstream primary school classroom, and into the hearts and minds of her student teachers. Julia is a member of the Academic Board of The MIECAT Institute, a tertiary institution offering higher degrees in therapeutic arts practice. In addition to work in school and university- based settings, she has written plays and musicals for children’s theatre – including many years as artistic and musical director of the children’s theatre ensemble, Julia and the Baby Grands.
Working
as a mentor and coach led her to a deep consideration of the role core
values might play in constructing lives of purpose, and Julia is now a
director on the Board of the Minessence International Cooperative Ltd, a
values education and research organization with the vision and mission
to “work together through values-centric processes to make a substantial
positive contribution to the creation of a society where all people can
live meaningful fulfilling lives.”
Reflecting this intention of “unfolding meaning through values”, Julia’s Masters thesis placed focus on those reflective practices that promote teacher renewal through paying close attention to personal core values, leading to a clearer understanding of being “at home” with one’s self and one’s deeper purpose.
She is currently completing her PhD, also at the University of Melbourne, where her attention is now on the journey of the teacher candidate and the role that personal core values might play in assisting them to build sustainable professional identities by designing new possibilities for innovative conversations that support the co-construction of these fledgling teacher selves. Julia currently lives on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Australia, with her husband, cat, and regularly visited by her two adult children (and spectacular grandchildren).
