Myung-Yong Um is a professor in the Department of Social Welfare at the Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Seoul, Korea. He joined the department in 1997. From 2007 through 2009 He served as Dean for the Graduate School of Social Welfare at SKKU. Before coming to SKKU Dr. Um held faculty appointment in the Department of Social Welfare at Inje University in Kyongnam, Korea serving as University’s first Director of the Research Center for Student Life. He also has been a research consultant at the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in Paris, France. 

Dr. Um holds M.S.S.W. degree from the University of Texas at Austin and Ph.D. degree (Social Work) from the Florida State University. Dr. Um has a broad research interest focusing on narrative inquiry of family process, preventive mental health, and the application of Appreciative Inquiry to family therapy practice. Over the next few years, he would like to facilitate and coach individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to uncover their strengths, fulfill their potentialities, turn their dreams into reality, and lead meaningful lives.

From 2005 through 2006, Dr. Um served as Editor-in-Chief of Korean Journal of Social Welfare, the membership journal of the Korean Academy of Social Welfare. He also served as Editor-in-Chief of Korean Journal of Family Therapy, the membership journal of the Korean Association of Family Therapy from 2005 through 2006. Dr. Um is the author of many books and articles that are related to social work practice, written mainly in Korean.
