Dr. John Winslade died May 4, 2025 in his home country of New Zealand. John came to the US
in 2003, accepting a professorship at California State University, San Bernardino, where he
worked until 2021 as a tenured professor. John served as a Professor of Counseling in the
College of Education, taught and supervised doctoral students in the Ed.D Program. He was the
coordinator of the MS in counseling program from 2003 – 2010 and from 2010 – 2013, he also
served as the Associate Dean for the College of Education.

John has an extensive publication record in the fields of narrative therapy, mediation, social
constructionism and counseling. His work spans several decades and covers topics such as
restorative practices in schools and narrative counseling. John was a sought-after international
leader in the field of narrative mediation, presenting more than forty keynotes and countless
workshops at conferences over his career. John was also a prolific writer and penned more than
fourteen books and over one hundred articles and book chapters, many of which were translated
into Spanish, Chinese, Danish, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and French. John supported and
supervised more than seventy-five doctoral students from many universities in the US, New
Zealand and Europe as well as mentored hundreds of students completing their Masters degrees.

John was dedicated to service, loved good ideas, and supported others to find peaceful life
pathways; whether he was working as a mediator for family court, spearheading projects in
restorative justice for school districts, facilitating peace talks for high conflict communities, or
hashing through complex theoretical concepts with graduate students. There are many who have
been touched by his generosity and will carry his work forward, following in his footsteps to
create what is just in actions and words.
