A Bangladeshi national resident in Philippines; Shayamal poses more than 25 years of experience in both grassroots and international development. He worked with national/international NGOs, government organizations and UN agencies including 7 years with International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR), Philippines as Training and Program Specialist for Organizational Learning, Leadership and Development. Since 2009 he is working as independent consultant and provided consultancy services in several Asian and African Counties for UNICEF, Red Cross/Crescent Societies, ministries and departments of national governments, NGOs, and international networks. Shayamal has developed training manuals, written reports; presented papers in numerous international seminars and a good number of his writings have been published in international journals and publications. Besides Taos Institute, he is affiliated with CLTS Foundation, India and IIRR, Philippines.
Shayamal holds a Ph.D. in Social Science from Tilburg University, Netherlands, a Master of Intercultural and International Management from the School for International Training (SIT), USA, a Master of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. He further holds a diploma in Leadership and Management from BRAC and a Diploma on Environmental Education from the Nehru Foundation, India.
Shayamal completed the Taos doctoral program in 2009; successfully defended his dissertation entitled: Promotion of Self-Help in Development & Social Change: Constructing non Subject-Object Processes”. His Ph.D. dissertation opens up an exciting possibilities of cooperative movement of self-help promotion and relational constructionist discourse in development and social change. He has developed practical tools of facilitating ‘Appreciative Interaction Processes’ as both unit of analysis and locus of development and social change. He wish to work more and more with change workers and organizations to spread the application of Appreciative Inquiry with relational constructionist ways of doing that establishes a relational movements of concepts, practices and creation of practical utilities in the life of local communities.
While studying in the same university, Shayamal and Sawpna began to construct relationship with each other and in 1987 marriage. After few year Shayamal + Sawpna got a son (Prativ) ; now grown-up; living with parent in Philippines and teaching Medical Technology at the University of Santo Thomas . While having lived in Philippines for over twenty years, Shayamal stays true with his roots in a Bangladeshi village and remains actively connected with a NGO named Voluntary Organization for Rural Development which he founded 30 years ago in his native village – Habashpur in Rajbari district of Bangladesh.
