Julia Storberg-Walker is an Associate Professor in the Executive Leadership Program of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at George Washington University, and an Affiliate Faculty at George Washington’s Global Women’s Institute. Prior to her work in higher education, she served at Deloitte & Touche, LLP and Deloitte Consulting in multiple roles and locations.

Julia a recognized scholar of women and leadership theory building research and has published and presented globally on theoretical and conceptual development for applied disciplines. She adopts a feminist lens and incorporates a variety of research strategies to her theorizing projects. She is currently focused on theorizing as a catalyst for social change and seeks to de-center male-normed processes for generating new knowledge.

Julia believes in the power of intention and the role of language in creating new futures. Theorizing, in this view, is explicit intention using words and metaphors that are intended to positively impact practical matters in daily life. The theorizing framework Julia is developing combines research literature, emotion, intuition, conversation, reflection, values, and aspirations. The framework initially emerged through a collaborative research project with several other women academics, and is built from an appreciative perspective. The framework at its core stands for integrative knowledge generation and opposes all claims of knowledge based on rationality alone.

In March, 2015, Julia and a doctoral student worked with rural Belizean women to co-construct new leadership identities and networks using this emerging framework. The project involved extensive pre-workshop conversations, curriculum development based on expressed learning needs and the theorizing framework, and a summative community building exercise designed to expose hidden connections and opportunities for partnership.

Julia is currently working on an edited volume, due out in mid-2016 from Information Age Publishing in collaboration with the International Leadership Association, titled Theorizing Women & Leadership: New Insights & Contributions from Multiple Perspectives. She was also the 2015 recipient of the International Leadership Association’s Women and Leadership Affinity Group’s Outstanding Scholar Award. Julia and her husband Jeff live with their four cats and dog Buddy in Winchester, Virginia, USA.
