A espera valeu à pena.

English comment on the E-book edition of Novos Paradigmas em Mediação [New Paradigms in Mediation] by Dora Fried Schnitman e Stephen Littlejohn (1999)

It is our pleasure to announce the long-awaited publication of the digital edition of Novos Paradigmas em Mediação [New Paradigms in Mediation]. It was well worth the wait. We are excited about the unrestricted access that this e-book edition will provide to Portuguese language readers. This edition is the first in the collection of books in Portuguese to be released as part of the Worldshare Books – Taos Institute collection.

Since its release, this book, which contains a number of social constructionist, systemic and generative approaches to mediation, has been used in courses designed for mediators. Although fifteen years have passed since the first printed edition was published, the texts are still relevant to the transformative purpose of mediation.

As described on the book’s back cover, the chapters deal with mediation programs in different parts of the world that have successfully used these approaches. It’s a kind of interdisciplinary “conversation” about conceptual and pragmatic issues that addresses question of dialogue, reflection, situation description and other creative forms of conflict solving. This discussion will allow readers to rethink old assumptions and practices.

This book will be useful to professionals, students and experts not only in the field of mediation and other alternatives forms of dispute resolution, but also to anyone interested in communication, psychology, sociology, social work, business, law, community organization and culture in general.

It was with great joy that I received the news of the publication of the e-book edition of Novos Paradigmas em Mediação [New Paradigms in Mediation]. I was also honored to be invited to provide a comment on the digital edition of a book which I see as a pillar to the systemic constructionist approach to dispute resolution.

Fifteen years after the sold-out first printed edition, students in mediation, and anyone else that uses dialogue as a tool for negotiation and understanding, whether as a participant in the process of dialoguing or as a facilitator, will have access to a work that gathers so many important authors and compiles texts that have in no way lost relevance.

Novos Paradigmas em Mediação [New Paradigms in Mediation] broaches diverse perspectives on the generative power of dialogue. It presents skills and hands-on situations where each author designs practices for turning conflict into consensus. The work includes reflections to orient education and training in transformative dialogue.

Dialogue, reflection and narrative are not only working models, but concepts guided by principles. They enable diverse practices to be revisited and revised from the perspective of the social construction of people, contexts and conflicts within a systemic scenario.

Congratulations to Stephen and Dora Schnitman for gathering in a single edition so many important ideas and authors. Congratulations to Taos Institute for wisely including this book in the Worldshare Books collection, thus enabling access to a compilation instrumental to the new paradigms.
